Citibank and Deutsche Bank in Serbia

BELGRADE — Radovan Jelašić said that Citibank and Deutsche Bank will soon enter the Serbian market officially.
“The National Bank of Serbia will once again, after a moratorium of several years, start approving Greenfield licenses for opening foreign banks in Serbia. Such licenses will be given out only in exceptional cases and only to the best foreign banks,” the NBS governor said.
He said that the state had enough time, three years, to sell its shares in banks and do what it planned to do.
“The state has already done what it wanted with its shares in banks, and the European Union, International Monetary Fund and the World Trade Organization have suggested that we consider the suggestion of Greenfield licenses again and that is what we will do soon.” Jelašić said.
Asked on a scale of “one to ten” how far bank reforms have progressed in Serbia, Jelašić said that the banking system should receive an “eight or nine”, and insurance a “seven,” adding that a lot more work lies ahead in all sectors
