SOFIA — Bulgaria and Serbia share a railway station as of yesterday(4th of December).
Bulgarian Transport Minister Petar Mutafchiev and Serbian Capital Investments Minister Velimir Ilić opened the joint frontier railway station, which is situated on Bulgaria’s western border with Serbia.
The joint project became possible after the enforcement of an agreement on border control and procedures in railway traffic, as well as the rules on its application signed on Monday.
The agreement, which dates from 2005, designates Dimitrovgrad as a joint border station where all procedures on acceptance and handing over of trains by the railway staff, as well as all border services of the two countries, will take place.
Investments in the station amount to more than five million euros, Ilić announced. From this sum, 3.7 million euros were spent on signalization and another 1.5 million was spent on the reconstruction of the site’s infrastructure.
The European Investment Bank funded the project.
