Yugoslav Film

This is a slight departure for the Belgrade Blog but nonetheless deserves attention.

Some will have heard about the Yugoslav film archive – reputedly it has one of the richest collections in Europe and is estimated to be worth millions of Euros. In recent years many films have been stored in poor conditions and its likely that there has been damage to films containing rare footage.

Happily at the end of August the large majority of the archive will be transferred to a four storey building in Kosutnjak. The French government deserve thanks for assistance to the tune of nearly 300,000 Euros as does the Serbian government which finally did the right thing. The Ministry of Culture has secured funds of nearly 600,000 EUR.

For the ‘icing on the cake’ all films that have been recorded on 35 mm reels will be digitally recorded ensuring that old Serbian film will live on for ever.

congratulations to all those involved in making sure this happened including Radoslav Zelenovic the Director of Jugoslovenska Kinoteka.

Out of topic comment: Do you get to choose the adds that show up at the bottom of the posts or is it chosen randomly by Google?

No the posts are chosen by Google based somehow on the predicted interests (or secured through spyware or whatever) of those that visit the page - at least I think.

I suppose you might have noticed that New Alliance for Kosovo advert that sometimes appears. If you check it out then one William Walker comes up as part of the group.

For the moment adverts are experimental here anyway - if they generate income etc.

I am also very pleased about this. People may scoff a little when one talks about Serbian (or should I say Yugoslav film) and its long history but its another plus point concerning culture / branding etc.

And there is just so much more to Balkan film than Kusturica who has almost managed to Bollywoodise the industry particularly in Serbia but also in the Balkans.

In the next few days I hope to update this post with something from the Palic Film Festival that took place last week. Now thats a wonderful festival.

JRT thats an acronym I have read for a while! Well Zelenovic's son is a friend of mine so I guess we are practically related :)
