Belgrade caffees

Belgrade has highly developed café-culture. You might notice the whole bunch of caffees all over the place, some nice, some ugly, some very plain and boring. Of course, the best thing is to go out there, roam the streets of Belgrade for a while and try to find café you like by yourself. That’s why we recommend that you do that before reading our guide. And if you find something we don’t have here, please don’t hesitate to write about your experience, good or bad.
People who live in Belgrade are often unaware of the number of cafes and clubs in their nearest surroundings. Be prepared for the so called `and where do we go now?` effect when standing in some of the Belgrade city squares, wandering to which café to go to. This section of the guide should come in handy in similar situations.

  • Strahinica Bana street caffes

With ca 20 cafes, street Strahinica Bana is, without a doubt, most popular cafe-street in Belgrade, and tends to even become one of the landmarks of the city. Most cafes are located between street numbers 50 and 80, but there are some at the beggining of the street. These cafes are among the fancies in the city, and nearly ninety percent of people here comes to see and to be seen. Prices are not that high, though, as one could expect. Mostly imaginative cafes with not-so-imaginative clientele. Take a stroll and pick one. Cafe, that is. The choice: Nachos, Kandahar, Ambasada, Buongiorno, Ipanema, Space… and the list goes on and on.

  • Skadarlija caffes

The same thing happens when you go to Skadarlija, the bohemian part of Belgrade: at least dozen cafes there too. They dont tend to be so fancy as cafes in Obilicev venac, and most of them is located in the building on the right side when your strolling from the top of the street. In the summer, its best you forget about cafes and sit in one of the many wooden breweries in Skadarlija with a big glass of beer.

  • Obilicev venac caffes

Cafes located in Obilicev Venac street: there are at least ten cafes at every moment in this street, and they are particularly good during summer days. Then you can sit in the garden and comment what other people just bought in the mall nearby. Number of cafes tends to remain the same, while the names they are a-changing all the time, so it’s no use in remembering them all. Just check them out.

  • Njegoseva street caffes

Caffes located in Njegoseva Street, Belgrade: Rosher # 5, Liquid # 6, Cvetni Trg # 8, Peti Element # 10, Jump Caffe # 10, House # 52, Hobotnica # 54, Moda # 61 . Number sign (#) after every cafe will tell you the number in Njegoseva street where cafe is located. Its best to take a stroll, down the street though and see for your self which one do you prefer.

  • Living room

Located at the Belgrade Youth cultural center, it welcomes people of all ages. A part of the cafe is really like someone’s living room, with large couch, few very comfortable sofas, and, of course, the TV showing the fashion channel. If you don’t like sitting in someone’s living room, you can always sit next to a really large window and count the trolleys passing by. If you don’t like this, you can sit at a normal table in the center. If you, on the other hand, despise all the options, climb up the stairs to find another café. This one has director-style chairs, and is surrounded by computers and computer geeks sitting behind them, playing games and surfing the net. The large screen in the back occasionally shows interesting alternative movies, but its rarely in the center of anyone’s attention. If there’s a concert going on in the club behind the café, you probably wont be able to enter the café itself without paying the ticket first. But, you still can sit in someone’s living room.

  • Dzidzi-midzi

A group of friends living in the same building founded this café, because they wanted to have their own place to sit and drink coffee, apparently. After a while, it became popular, possibly because of the screaming wall colors calling everyone else in through the large windows looking at a busy Belgrade street. Cheap and friendly, not for those who don’t like combination of orange and blue.

  • Ili-ili

Set right next to the Radovan café, this one offers somewhat louder music, often soul, funk, and often with the owner acting as deejay. Colorful and modern interior with long couches, suitable for bigger crowd if you’re lucky enough to grab a table. Dancing allowed.

  • Radovan

A small café in a small downhill street in Dorcol, old Belgrade city quarter with very pleasant atmosphere thanks to the cozy, old-fashioned furniture and wacky guests. Quiet music and dim lights – but that doesn’t necessarily means romantic atmosphere – this is more a kind of place where you would take your friends out, not your date.

  • Optimist

One of the few places that tries to fight the lack of pubs in the city of Belgrade. At best, it can be called a mixture somewhere between a bar and a pub. Usually filled with crowd in their thirties, thanks to the cheap beer, dark but pleasant interior design and the fact that its one of the few places still open after 3AM. Two distracting TV sets, it seems that everywhere you sit one of them is going to poke you in the eye.
